Charter of Rights for Children and Young People in Care

In championing the rights and voices of children and young people, BoraCare is fully committed to and endorses the Charter of Rights for Children and Young People in Care.

The Charter incorporates the following rights that children and young people in Care are due, these include:

  • The right to be safe and well cared for
  • The right to be listened to and have a say in decisions
  • The right to be treated with respect
  • The right to know about and connect with their culture
  • The right to have contact with people who matter to me
  • The right to good health, fun and play
  • The right to privacy
  • The right to a good education
  • The right to get the support I need so I’m ready to leave care and feel good about my future

Helplines and complaint options for children and young people in care

If a child or young person is worried or sad or thinks their rights are not being respected and need someone who can help them, they can:

  • Speak to their carer or support worker
  • Speak to the supervisor at your worker’s office
  • Speak to the Office of the Guardian for Children and Young People on 1800 275 664
  • Lodge a complaint through the Department for Child Protection complaints line on 1800 003 305
  • Kids Helpline (24 hours) 1800 551 800
  • Headspace (for young people over the age of 12) 1800 063 267
  • And if 16 or over, GOM Central https://gomcentral.elmplace.org.au/
